Blog #2 – RSPB Leighton Moss

A short time after I went to the Highlands I went to RSPB Leighton Moss Nature Reserve hoping to see some species I hadn’t seen before like a Bearded Tit, Water Rail, Great White Egret and the rarer American Wigeon (which had been spotted on the reserve).

When I arrived there it was a dry and sunny day; because it was early, the visitor centre wasn’t open, yet so I went straight to the different viewpoints.

In the first viewpoint I waited about 15mins until I saw the first new species (Bearded Tit) – a flock of fifteen came to the grit trays which was great.

The next viewpoint I went to was great and I saw more new species (Pintail) which was great to see.

After that I walked down the path to another few viewpoints but I saw some common species like Gadwall, Mallards, Eurasian Wigeon and also a Marsh Harrier.

Then I walked down the path some more and spotted a Marsh Tit which I didn’t expect to see. I then finally arrived at the other hide where I saw one Great White Egret in the distance.

Then I went to the last viewpoint and on the way to that there was a feeding station set up with a Nuthach, two Marsh Tits and some Blue Tits, Great Tits and some Coal Tits. The last hide I went to is where I saw some Little Egrets and the Water Rail (5) which I have been trying to see for years and they are one of the most difficult species to get a photo of, even though I did not get a good photo of one I was still really happy to see 5 of them.

RSPB Leighton Moss was one of the best places I have been to in a while. I loved my day out that day and I hope I get the chance to go again.
